just use a gaussian blur to take the shoes more out of focus than the face and you'll be set.

His smile and the overall colouring of this photo and its candidness so easily overcome whichever tiny technical fault there might be in it (one that only you seem to see, anyway). I am all enthralled by his cute little smile ... I get totally blind to any flaws here!

Well you can't even see that his face is out of focus in this shot becuase it's too small. You'd most likely see it at 100% on screen or on a print.

the joy of autofocus...if the child is the reason for the shot why is he so small in it. It the slide is, then you need a wider shot I think. the balance feels wrong, but I do like his expression a lot.
