I like how the tones and their locations play a trick on the mind. Intellectually I know the lines are straight, but when you just look over the whole image the brain starts to think the lines are all cattywampus because of the shadows.

I think it is the diagonals that make it look that way, removed it looks more regular.

The second one looks flat. The first one has more dimension and volume.
