The only reason I would buy records is for the album artwork. Sound quality is purely subjective and is something that cannot be proved one way or the other.

That being said I only buy mp3 these days because with cloud support I can have any song whenever I want where ever.

The only Vinyl that I've bought in recent years have been because they were out of print. I do have a nice collection, many of them are out of print. I like the USB turntable, and am recording these digitally using Sony's Sound Forge software.

The last time that I digitized something like this, it was using Fortran/Assembly to do my own device drivers on an A/D card. Also in the 80s.

$40 for Nursery Cryme. The USB turntable pays for itself with a few records.

Going through more Vinyl records, most at the 30 year mark. Running them through the USB Turntable, and to Disk. "Way back Then", I bought a record, recorded to Cassette using a good deck, stored the LP away. So most have only been played a couple of times. One did warp, probably the product of some move decades ago. The USB turntable managed to track the record. They used one of the cuts on an animated show, "Symbionic Titans" a couple of years ago- so my daughter knew "Space-Age Love Song". Maybe I'll open a Youtube account and upload the cuts that are not on it, and are long out of print. Store the lost songs into the ether.

Regardless of media stored, some of this music is a part of life. It's a bummer when it is no longer available. Making a copy to disk puts in in the same category as your Digital images, you get more control over backing them up. Turns out I have "New Order: Power, Corruption, and Lies" and "Yes: Close to the edge" on LP as well as CD. The EP, and back of LP, cover made to look like a 5.25" floppy is a trip. I also have working 5.25" drives, and a few diskettes. Jaz drives, about 1/2 the media has failed. Zip does a bit better. 3.5" floppies- 20 year mark seems t be the 50% failing point. High-Density Mag-Tape that we used in the 1980s for digital imaging: no longer readable. The data is lost forever.

Vinyl has appeal over CD to purists (read: old rich guys) because it is analog and doesn't suffer from digitization artifacts; they do sound warmer to be sure. But to say vinyl beats CDs for durability is absurd. For one thing, vinyl scratches if you as much as sneeze. Sure, CDs also scratch, but all CDs have redundant information designed especially for damages like this, so the CD players will automatically recover the lost information from the non-scratched part of the disc.

All I stated: a few of my oldest CD's suffered from coating separation, and nothing on those portions could be read. It's a digital disk. Now, since the problems occurred at the 25-year mark, I have to wonder what happens to them at 50 years. I have LP's bought 50 years ago. Nothing lasts forever. Whether the process improved, I do not know. If newest CD's last over 100 years, I'll not be around to test. The ones I bought in the 80s, had some problems.

If you want them forever, treat them like digital data and back them up. You'd swear I pissed into people's wheaties by telling them CD's are digital media, and are subject to physical breakdown.

Had a Bee Gee's CD..... but it delaminated when I took it to the gun range.

The other day I was putting all of my DVDs into a CD wallet (so I could throw the cases away and save some room) - there were a couple that just fell apart in my hands... Separated into two layers of plastic, and a thin foil layer...

Ouch. I had a Canon 135/3.5 in Leica Mount that had the inner group separate into two elements. Cleaned the cement off with 99% Isopropyl alchohol, and used index matching oil from an immersion lens to regroup. 7 years later, still perfect.

40 years ago, I respooled my brothers favorite 8-track tape that broke. Used tape from an 8mm splicer. First time, got it backwards. Respooled it.
