You should spend a week in DC at the museums.
There are about 12 or 13 in DC alone and free with huge numbers of programs.
There are multiple private, good museums - Corcoran, Renwick, etc.
There are also the specialty museums which are a must see, like that National Museum of Health and Medicine, the Holocaust Museum, the Newseum, there is an unending supply of stuff to see.
Best time is now - fewer tourists, fewer crowds.
Worst time is June, July, August, Sept. enormous crowds, hot

If you like art, the West wing of the National Gallery is wonderful, not as big as the Met in NY but more concentrated. Cameras are OK, tripods are not.

Yes, there are tons of museums in this area. I have lived here most of my life (when not overseas - USAF brat) and still haven't seen all there is to see. I'm constantly going to the "main" museums (Air & Space, Natural History, American History) and attractions as I always end up playing tour guide when family is visiting. I really need to get out and see some of the other smaller museums in the area.

I work across the street from the Museums, I forget sometimes whats inside of them. Living and growing up in the DC area we get bombarded with trips to DC in Elementary School. By the time we are in High School we dont want to see any of them ever again. But that being said, if you haven't been to DC before, between the monuments, the museums, the Mall itself, and the Government buildings you can go in, you can stay busy here for weeks. It makes for a decent lunch in the summer, walk around taking pictures. The Smithsonian has an absolutely fantastic garden thats only any good while the flowers are blooming of course.

Now that I have the glass to make stuff like this, I'm waiting for my new computer build to be completed so I can download the software.
