I feel like I really want some recovery of the contrast, though.

I am a real contrast kind of guy but contrast just killed this shot.

I like the subject , the idea and presentation. But I think you've equalised too far the palette of colour and contrast between the foreground and the background. They merge far too convincingly and it's almost as if the foreground is trying to hide behind the background mist, almost washed out in comparison. I would keep just a subtle separation in the scale of contrast between the foreground and background.

I like the original, which has a kind of dreamy feeling that imo is decreased by the edit.
