Want a DSLR with video? (D90 preview)

OK, so you can have another backup body and shoot HD video too? Cuts out the videographer and puts more money in the wedding shooters' pocket.

I'm a videographer. A videographer is just a photographer who can make use of the forth dimension. One who isn't confined to frozen time. One who understands not simply the lines that fashion art but one who can traverse them. There are no other differences. Except perhaps as Mike points put, the opportunity to expand.

true - but a DSLR and all the kit costs enough already - and is heavy enough.
I don't think they are trying to make a pro video feature at all - but adding video as an option for people to use. And at 1024 pixels its a decent enough video feature to want to use - not a gimmiky 600 or less which simply would not see use

BTW, I have been waiting very impatiently I might add, for dSLR makers to get their sh** together on this for over a decade now. We should have been in solid with second generation implementations over 5 years ago. Sure the luddites and nearsighted will resist this just as I'm sure there is a mechanic somewhere on the planet who also refuses the new tools which would make his job more fun and easier at the same time. Those people will be soon lost in the cracks of time as progress overtakes or will join it. It isn't a replacement technology as digital was to film. It's merely an additional tool. I can remember all the same arguments surrounding autofocus and the same types who bashed it then praise it now. So it will be with "motion photography".

even though video will start out as a kinda sorta accessory I hope the video activation isn't buried somewhere in the menu...

i think would be useful to record impromptu moments and would be used a lot more if quick access to recording was available... maybe on a customizable button..

But then I thought the same thing about mp3s on a mobile phone. Mind you some people actually use that feature so I'm sure there must be someone out there who wants to take videos with a photocamera.

Well they already do. I don't think there's P&S or bridge camera manufactured in the last 5 years that doesn't have video. Right?

It's just twiggy video (till the new Casio hit town) with middle/low grade fixed lenses, usually mono sound, and tiny noisy sensors.

I think it will be fun to see a guy with a Nikon D4 mounted on a SteadyCam.

Something I picked up from another professional photojournalist, he had a small HD video camera mounted to the tripod collar ontop of his 70-200 lense using a male to male adapter so what ever he photographed he had great quality video of it aswell and it helps out a great deal when producing a multimedia story for online.

The D90 will support punch cards as a storage medium. I knew it would come eventually.

Why would I want something I never use? I'm a photographer, not a videographer.

If you are a fine art or portrait photog, I can agree with you, but being a photojournalist the line between photoJ and videographer is becoming very blurry. Many publications now are wanting photogs with video experience. This is just the tool to help people like me, a photojournalist without video skills wanted by publications; it seems like it's a decent backup camera and the video capabilities will allow us to take video while using familiar equipment without the extra gear.

Well, I think it is a good idea. I know most of us can't even think about making videos with a dslr because it is just not right. But I can think of some situations where I would actually like to make a short video of something. You know, it's like these cameraphones. You won't be taking serious photographs with 2-3mp plastic lens camera, but ocasionally there are times you use it anyway. Especially if it will be possible to take full res photos while filming.

I dunno. At first, I thought "wow, video in a DSLR? I MUST have one of those" which, I guess, is exactly what Nikon wants me to think . But now that I think about it, it just seems a bit pointless to me. I call myself a photographer for a reason: I take photographs. I like recording video, sure, but I don't call myself a videographer. If I was, I'd use a dedicated video camera rather than a DSLR.

However, those other specs look mouth-watering. A rival to the Canons of late? Let's hope so
