like everybody has said, i think the reflector is a low cost answer to your problem and there is always a way around your problems like not having someone to hold it.

You should check out ebay for reflectors, you can pick them up really cheap on there. I bought a large reflector for only 50p from there!

I've just had a quick look on ebay and prices seem to be as low as £5 at the moment, which is still pretty good. You'd probibly pay £20-£30 for the same thing in a shop
