This is a photo that I took in October and it won my local photowalk contest and went on to compete for the grandprize. It did not win anything further but I wanted to share it with you guys.

I really like this photo!
Lines, their direction, parallelism all over the photo, shapes, shadows... You did great!

Just so you know, I like it more then the photo which won the grand prize

Nice Ron. Keep it up.

IMO, the last stone should not be in the frame and i would try and fit the whole top of the church. But obviously the photo is decent because you made it that far.

Thanks Robin. I see what you are saying about the steeple. I'll have to look at the original and I'm still not sure that I can tell, but it appears that the top may have been block by the tree anyway. To me the feature is the memorial and the three crosses looking down. There is another cross on top of that steeple though.

Also, there were people just camera left of the frame. I took about 3-5 photos of this same shot and the one that shows the trees left have people in them. This was one of those occasions where I was actually paying attention to my composition and surroundings (well except for the steeple.).

Very nice photo. I've been there, very sobering. It's also known as The Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial. Many lives were lost that day.

Just use the LR4 crop to straighten it

Wonderful B&W tonalities,Ron! Excellent time of the day to make a shot like this. The shadows, and the highlights on the edges both work very well. This is a good example of sidelighting on the foreground, to show shape and add dimensional clues. The dark shadow across the bottom is a strong element, and it is a good contrast against which we can see the square blocks and their lighted sides as well as their shadowed sides. Again, the sidelighting on the concrete pillars and columns is a really great lighting setup for the foreground. The facade of the church is front-lighted, and that works pretty well for that element. On say a flat, dull,overcast day this shot would...suck. This is "seeing light".
