Watermarks and good program?

Hi, I'm new to this. I would like to put "proof" or "watermarks" on some of my pics. Not sure where to go and what program to buy that would be good? I had a friend download Picasa 3. I don't know a lot about it. I would like a web site that I can put my pics on and people can see them. Willing to spend some money just not a arm and a leg since this is just a hobby for me.
Any help would be appreciated.
