Without it, my eye is drawn immediately to the people at the door

Apart from that, I really like the idea and it does reflect the title. Great!

After thought: Did you get one from a lower angle by any chance?

Ooh, reverse psychology! I so didn't want to post after I read this! Then I did want to post, something like "No, it doesn't", but then i would have posted, and it would have! Argh! Catch-22!

Anyway, I like the image a lot, but unusually for me, I wonder if the picture would work better in colour...?

It looks like crap in color because of the glare and his bright sweater.
I try to always use standard crop dimensions so here it is in 2x3

I love the way the little boy is straddling that strong diagonal line!!! The title soooo fits this shot. Every parent knows what this pic is about.

I was pleased to see and get to the shot before the little boy moved.
It was predestined for BW because the boy's shirt was really bright, the glare from the windows was intense and the mother in the doorway was indistinct.

Shot with the unfortunately mediocre kit lens on an EP-3 with an EVF 39 mm 1/90 5.6 iso 640.
This would have been sharper with my 700 but this was a casual walk with my wife.

Says a lot, Lew... I think we have all been there. I love the way you caught the distance between the boy and the parents... really emphasizes the "leaving" aspect of the image. Difficult background to work with... but I like it. I prefer the first crop overall, but like he background much better in #2.
