Darn.. that "almost" part sucks! I was hoping for some gore!!! :) <j/k>! Glad you survived! lol!

Hint... ZOOM.. and get down on the seals level!!! They also look underexposed....

lol... I've done that too. For some reason it just looks like another piece of drift wood because you are not expecting it to be right out in the open. Glad you got home intact.

Poor thing looks a little sick to my untrained eye. I used to hike Point Reyes in California and often encountered herds of these cute animals sunning themselves on the low tide sand flats. People are advised to keep their distance and not bother the animals, but really, the sea lions can be pretty intimidating. Sick or healthy, I bet that cutie in your photo has quite a strong bite!

I agree with what others here said about the exposure. ISO 500 seems a little fast, but the light looks pretty miserable so maybe that was what you had to work with. I doubt Ms. Pinniped would have had the patience for a couple umbrellas and lights. But I like your compositions and the inclusion of background imagery for reference and scale. Nice.

ISO 500? Are these images tagged? It is possible I was using 500...it was getting late and it was very hazy...I inevitably ran out of light and had to split

I don't have a zoom!!! I would have loved to get closer to him...alas, all I have is my new D7000 and an 18-105 mm lens (which I love almost as much as my own son). When I finally take that million dollar pic...a good zoom is on the top of my list..lol....and a macro..

My exif plugin snagged the information from your Flickr.

Uhhh.. Charlie? An 18-105 IS a zoom! ;) It zooms from 18mm to 105mm! I guess you mean you don't have a LONG zoom? :-P

Some are longer than others...it's a part of life.

Should have laid down in front of him and got him at eye level. Surely you could have moved quicker than him should it have turned into "seals gone wild"

Ya..ya...very funny guys...105 mm is pretty pathetic..doesn't quite qualify in my book...lol! I used a 300 when I was shooting film...I'd be happy with that...especially if I could do macro with it..! Like I said...when I get that million dollar shot...everyone gets a new lens ;)

LOL...you know what...that was my dilemma. I was trying to keep at least 6 feet or so...plus there was wood between us and was having a hard time getting low.

Plus..I wasn't sure if it was one of those rare jumping seals...which are quite a thing to behold ;)

I think I actually did get down low with him/her. I'll check when I get home and post if I do
