What happened here?

I know a few thinks about the photoing but but I've never seen this before. Notice the diagonal flare that I am getting.

I was in the shadows and the subject was in the shadows and I used a reflector to light her up. She is standing infront of the dark interior of a conex box. My only thought is that I picked up some flare from the sun but not sure how sine I was in the shade.

Straight out of camera, except for blurring obviously.

Looks kind of like something that happened to me once which turned out to be a light leak through one edge of a shoddy filter. Diagonal cause it was only coming from one part of the rim and splashing across the lens.

So maybe that? Or something similar could be happening with the conex box - rusted hole on one side causing directional flares?

Looks like flare, maybe caused by an unfortunate reflection of the light off of the reflector. It definitely looks like flare.

In years past, there were some very odd issues with light reflecting from the rear element of a lens and onto the sensor surface itself!!! This was called "the red spot issue", and it was a significant problem with the Kodak 14n full-frame SLR and a number of lenses, such as some of the old Nikon prime lenms designs, like the 50/1.8 AF and AF-D, but also it was a huge problem with the Tamron 90mm AF-SP lens. It was based on how the light passed through the exit pupil of a lens, and caused basically a "hot" spot, and that hot spot at the exit pupil went right back to the rear element of the lens, and caused a round, reddish or orange "spot" in images. ANd the weird thing is--this problem occurred to the worst degree in situations like the one you were in: shooting a lighter subject seen against a DARK FIELD!!! It was a terrible problem photographing in-studio for many people.

I wonder if this isn't a similar type of issue, but just a weird, glancing light that shows up so strongly BECAUSE the field is dark, and you were in a darker area as well. Dark field, shooting in a darkened area, light subject is a pretty good recipe for a weird flare like this.

Is it just in that one image? That would suggest Derrel's "random ray of light" thing is probable. If it happens in multiple shots, probably more the equipment or a larger/more permanent lighting situation.

If it was that bright, that makes me think the chances of terrible flare might have been pretty high. Where was the light source in relation to the lens axis? My guess is the light was coming from about 1 o'clock...

A few random thoughts: No filter was on the lens right? Did the lens have a lens hood on it? Do you suppose the Sunlight might have been raking in through the side-slit in a petal-style lens shade?

EDIT: I JUST pulled the image into lightroom...by grabbing the curves tool and manipulating it, I can now SEE exactly what the issue is. You've gotten a flare from sunlight. Look above her head at the circular flaring...those circles are the outside edges of internal lens elements...you've been hit by strong light rays, bouncing around and hitting the internal lens elements, which shows up in their outer circumference being illuminated...I see that the lens was pretty wide-open at f/2.5...

I didn't notice on the lcd because of the sun. No filter and the lens didn't come with a hood.

I think I figured it out. It's a flare but a flare from the reflector which was held in the lower left of the image. The sun was in the upper left of the frame.
