For me, the most important thing a lens hood does is protect my glass

It seems to me, when out shooting the hood also catches a lot of "Dirt" that would have otherwise landed on the front element.

Where are you that large amounts of dirt are continuously falling down from above? Blast mining site photography?

A lens hood is needed to make your lens look bigger and get you that "pro" look.

Jk, the can be useful if you are an eejit like me and have a tendency to bang your lens off stuff. And yeah the branded ones are massivley overpriced for what they are, but hey photography is expensive so if you print a brand on it its worth more! The knock offs are probably made in the same factory by the same people anyway, thank you eBay and fast delivery from china!

Also it's only Flare if you don't have Flair.

Y'all missed something... many lens hoods are also cut so as to allow additional light in at the corners, which reduces...... that effect where you get darker in the corners, which for SOME reason the name is eluding me at the moment.

it prevents light from hitting the front element at an angle, causing flare, low contrast and other abominations. A lens hood is much more important than most give credit to and way more necessary and protective than a UV filter

Also, they are usually made out of plastic, break easily, and get lost very easily. Which is why I never use them anymore.

(Though this thread tries very well to convert me back)
