What is this? How to avoid it?

Barrel and pincushion distortion are caused in the optics (lens).

No pincushion or barrel distortion affects the whole image right? I'm just talking about around the edges where there is some lose in data...not sure what to call it.

I can't see what you're referring to with your photo... It looks slightly blurry probably due to camera shake and the white balance is off... But I guess I don't see what you're looking at. Can you post a 100% crop of what you're talking about?
