What lens should I get for Automotive Photography

From what I've heard, you just want a couple of different options for auto photography. For example, a macro lens will let you get in close to capture some of the detail shots (logos, louvres, fins, hoods, etc.) and an ultra-wide angle will allow for dramatic low angle shots and interior shots.

A good zoom lens is also a good investment.
It will let you get some aggressive angles you couldn't acheive because of the lack of distance.

IE... first is shot at about 24mm. I normally sit on the starting line and shoot with my 24-70 but I have some people that want some shots from straight on. So for that I have to walk down a hundred feet or two and use my 70-200 IE Shot 2.
Obviously a different situation than stills, but you can see what I mean. Different angle/perspective

With your budget of around $700 you can get a prime 35mm or 50mm 1.8 G and the 55-300mm VR telephoto. It would be cheaper if you buy used or refurbs. Go to the popular sellers B&H, Adorama, Cameta, and KEH for deals on new, used and refurbs. Of course there are better lenses out there such as the 70-300mm VR, 50mm 1.4 etc. A lot of folks here can give you more suggestions but I'm limiting it to your budget. Others may disagree, but those two lens can get you started. You've done it with lesser equipment. Also lens rentals are also a good way to actually try them out before purchasing.

Nikon 180mm 2.8, about 6 v-flats, a 12-foot silk, and some small Fresnel's oughta do it. And a good understanding of comping in layer masks....At least it did when we'd shoot freightliners in the studio.
