What max shutter speed for people around bonfire?

I'd use a flash around 1/8-1/16th power, a 1/60th shutter speed at f/2.8 and an ISO 0f 800.

I would also use a flash! But I would expose for the fire whatever that is and then set the flash up to fill within that exposure. Usually a camp-fire is pretty close to 1 second at around f/3 or 4 and IS0 100. Longer with smaller apertures can look totally awesome...

I recently took some bon-fire photos, there isn't much "available light" to get anything but long blurry exposures.

I suggest doing what I did, use a strong flash, and point it nearly straight up. The light will be diffused off the smoke in the air and create a fill that doesn't overpower the lighting from the fire.
