I feel like I am cheating if I switch to P or A...

Just wondering why you feel that way. It is nothing wrong with using P or A mode.

Lol I don't know why. I guess I feel if I don't have total control of everything, I am letting the camera take the picture for me.

Aperture priority mostly, Manual on occasion.

I'm a masochist as well.

I relish in the pain.

Actually, you still have control when using other mode such as the A mode.

If the camera meter think aperture = f/4, shutter speed = 1/250 and ISO 100 (EV 12) will give you a correct exposure such as shooting in overcast day.

If you like to shoot with aperture wide open to create a shadower depth of field, you can set the aperture to f/2.8 and in A mode, the camera will adjust the shutter speed to 1/500 for you while ISO still set at 100 (based on the camera meter readings).

Or you can use manual mode and change the Aperture to f/2.8 and then change the shutter to 1/500 so that the meter in the viewfinder is point to 0 (also based on the same camera meter readings).

You see, either case, you are in control. But it is up to you to use the mode you feel more convenience (personal preference)

I don't know what you do when you shoot in manual mode, but I've always used the TTL, and my hand held meter for references even when I did shoot in manual.

Draw a picture if you don't want to cheat, I guess. It's never going to be your creation in that sense, even if you correctly guessed the exposure every time.

Usually A, but depends on how I feel at the moment!

I usually base the mode on the light. I use light to determine everything I focus on. Always Light first. Then mode. It's kind of like Frank -Loyde. Form follows function. Mode follows light.
