What the hell is going on with these filters?

Shooting with a Nikon D600 28-70mm f2.8

The lens without any filters is flawless from what I've seen. However whenever a filter is added (77mm) an obnoxious image destroying glare of some sort appears. It doesn't appear in every photo though even with the exact same settings just seconds later. I've tried hoods, shading the entire camera, fluctuating iso, aperture, exposure times of course. Nothing I can find is consistent with this glare. The red image was taken with a Hoya 72r Infrared filter, iso50 f10 20 seconds. The photo on the right was taken with a b&w filter 3.0 (both filters 10 stops down), iso50, f22 13 seconds. I must say it's very irritating. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Put a cover over your viewfinder (it should have come with one). It's light leaking into the camera body and reflecting on to the sensor.

If you don't have one, either cover it with a glove, hat, lens cap, whatever. I bought 5 knock-offs from ebay for $3 shipped.

Yeah - I lost mine the first week. I use a piece of gaffer's tape, now.

If I was truly a genius, I would have told you your camera is defective and to send it to me for 3-4 years of exhaustive testing and repair work. :mrgreen:

Its a good idea to get a strap with this integrated, then you dont lose it (thats what Canon does).

I don't recall ever losing one, but knowing how important that little viewfinder cover can be has a lot to do with not ever losing one.

This is one reason the flagship-level Nikon bodies made for the last 30 years or so have all featured a built-in eyepiece blind (also often called an eyepiece shutter). It's realllly handy to have it built-in.

If you order them on ebay from China they are about $3.50 each. Just get a few and sprinkle them in all your gear bags. Then you can hunt for them out on a shoot. Derrel - I'm jealous!

Sort of required gear if you shoot without a human head attached to the eyepiece. I lost the original in just a few days. I swear - tooth fairy!

I just bought 5 of 'em off fleabay and put one with every piece of gear that I would use when I'm not shooting with my eye at the eyepiece. Most notably, in an old 35mm film cannister with my MU-1b.

Plus a few extras for when I do lose one........

Just noticed my T90 has one (shutter blind lever), had never used it, only the one on the strap, always thought it was the dioptric adjustment so was afraid to touch it!
