What was your first expensive lens?

Shortly after upgrading from a D70 to a D200 I returned to the store and bought another D200, a 70-200 f/2.8 AFS VR, a 17-55 f/2.8 AFS, a 85 f/1.4 AFD, two SB-800's, a quantum external battery system, a couple of MB-D200 grips, a Manfrotto tripod, a Manfrotto monopod and some heads and quick release brackets. A good day for that salesman.

Back in the 80's I bought a Minolta 70-210mm f/4, I think it was around $600.00. That was 2 months rent to me back then.

My first expensive lens was the Nikkor 24-70mm 2.8. I figured if I'm going big I might as well get the other two to complete the trinity...and I did. Best decision I made. I don't have a need to purchase any more glass.

Exactly! :) (although I still want the Nikkor 200mm Macro!)

My first, and only expensive lens is a sigma 70-200 2.8. I realllllly need the tokina 11-16 2.8, and nikon 17-55 2.8 to complete my DX trinity though. And I really want a 300 2.8, but I'd have to work overtime for the rest of my life to pay it off.

My first expensive lens was a brand-new Tamron 300mm f/2.8 SP-LD with a matching B-Bar Multi-Coated 1.4x teleconverter. I payed $1699 for it, back in 1985. That was quite a bit of money at that time. A nice, clean, two-bedroom apartment rented for $240 a month, and cable TV was $14.95 a month.

As makes me Grumpy looking in my wallet in the Present!

And like others my first most expensive was "Big Bertha!"
She was a beauty but had to let her go! Me Sad!

The most expensive lens I bought was $400 and I would say I'm doing okay so far without spending an entire pay check. However Photoshop which has been the greatest tool has cost me at least an arm....

My first expensive lens was a Canon 17 - 40 L lens. The most expensive lens I have now is for my 645D. The 400 prime which is £3700 new. I bought it used in great condition for about £900

Several years ago I had a yearning for a Canon 70-300mm IS zoom, but the local Canadian $900.00 price (with taxes) made me lose interest. I kept checking for used ones on eBay for around 6 months, but couldn't believe what people were paying for used copies of this lens. It was available from B&H for around $600.00 new, many of the lenses were going for this much and more - one sold for over $900.00!

Waiting finally paid off when I won an auction for the first version of the lens, the 75-300mm, for $405.00. As a double bonus it came with a $65.00 hood and was from a seller in Canada, meaning I was spared paying 13% tax we are charged when importing some items. So with postage I paid $435.00, or less than half the local price of a new one.

I've scored great deals locally on a few other non Canon lenses since then, but they were less than this one.

A 210mm f/5.6 Schneider Symmar S which I had to buy used for $400.00 back in I think 1979.
