but first I would find something interesting to photograph
 
one can't make that determination by looking at the finished images. post the normal shot which might help.

Start taking a meter reading for the shadows and then one at the highlights and count the stop difference. That should start you off , or set you "blinkie" function on and keep over exposing until the whole scene is blinking at you, then go the same number of stops in the other direction.

As Dan Burkholder says, "you can't be too rich, too thin, or make too many exposures."

Better to have more than you use than not enough.
