What's going on with my lens?

I am having some strange things happening with my Canon 2.8 24-70. There are black areas in the corners of my photos when I am zoomed out (perhaps the shadow of my lens hood??). I would attach an example but it doesn't seem to upload.

It sounds like the lens hood is causing vignetting but without more information its impossible to pin down the cause. Answers to the following questions might help.
Is the lens hood attached correctly? If its a petal type the short petals go left and right and the long ones top and bottom.
What camera, is it a FF or crop sensor?
What lens hood, is it a manufacturers hood that came with lens or third party hood?
What else attached to lens, filters etc?

No, it's probably not a shadow.
If the lens hood is blocking part of the view it is more likely to do that when the lens is zoomed in to it's shorter focal lengths.

The lens comes with a Tulip lens hood. Make sure you have the tulip leaves oriented correctly.
I landscape format the longer leaves should be at the top and bottom of the lens and the short leaves at the sides.

This is fact. Remember too that the hoods are lens specific. Lenses have different fields of view and therefore the hoods are longer or shorter one from the next. Is it possible you have the wrong hood attached? The hood that should be on it is an EW-83F.

Do you have this issue if you do NOT have any hood attached?

This can be caused by filters, but usually just one filter isn't sufficient to be visible in the edge of the frame. Are you stacking more than one filter on the front of your lens?

Which 24-70 do you have? Is this the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM or the newer EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM II?

The original is a "reverse zoom" (the lens extends longer as you zoom wide -- which is backwards of what most lenses do). It has a much deeper hood.
The version II is a normal zoom and, as such, it has a much shallower hood.

Both lenses would have included a Canon factory hood. Are you using the factory hood?

The original has a deeper hood which should be labeled: EW-83F
The version "II" has a shallower hood which should be labeled: EW-88C

Make sure you are using the correct hood.

To mount the hood, align the red dot on the hood to the red dot on the lens, attach and give it a quarter turn and it should click in place.
