What's This?

I snapped this in Scotland, in the hills overlooking the Campsie Fells. It is concrete, around four feet tall and has a grooved triangular plate on top. My friend and I think it has something to do with Ordnance Survey but would like to know for sure. Any ideas?

Your right Chickenhawk, its a trig point for the ordinance survey:
they returned to the same measurement points lots of times and so to get exactly the same point they built them in concrete.

Just feel sorry for the guys that carried the cement up all the remote Munroes...

it probably makes a good monopod even to this day - just not too portable!

Nice view. Scotland is such a wonderful place for the panoramics, just wish I got a chance to visit it.
