whats wrong - red blob - lens or sensor ?

I'm not sure what the red blob is on the pic. It happens when I click camera facing sun. Its Nikon D5200.

i put on a uv filter then it had light green gradient slab....any help ?

it's there for the same reason the sun is appearing like a gigantic ninja throwing star...

Red blob: lens issue, very common when shooting toward a high, strong sun. WHewn the UV filter is added, the green flare is caused by the FLAT surfaces of the UV filter...filters very often flare when shot toward the sun.

ah I see.. I haven't seen this with point and shoot cameras.. well did get around by putting shade by hand.

UV filters generally cause more problems than they solve.

Only put a UV filter on your lens for 'protection' when there is some imminent threat the lens needs to be protected from.

Yeah that is flare alright. I am actually surprised it is not even worse. Was that shot outside of Flagstaff by chance?

Ya. Looks like it could be US 89 or US 180.

That is my thought, looks like a stretch of the road coming back from Cameron. Well actually between Antelope Valley back to Flag. It is 89 in that case, I have had to go that way to most of my rez jobs. That also looks like the slowest part of my drive back home in my MACK, I hate that part of the drive. I can practically walk faster.
