I'll go with the lathe chuck, as well...but a very heavy duty lathe. Look at the number of layers of steel in that chuck...it's not just a simple casting with jaws in it. The layers and 4 'teeth' tell me it's for heavy duty work...maybe even an oil well drill chuck, if there's such a thing?

I figured it had to be some sort of chuck. I just had to ponder on it a while. Of course, it helps to guess the tool when you own one.
