No it is not an alien life form. I met this creature while camping last weekend.
It is called a wheel bug and is very beneficial for controlling pest insects like the Japanese beetles and tent caterpillars. They are also very reclusive, I grew up in Indiana and this is the first one I have seen.
A couple of photos and and I let it roll on its merry way.
