Where does my NAS go?

Hello,

So I just moved into my new place and am looking into purchasing a NAS 2 disk system running Raid 1.

My office and desktop are running on wireless as the router and modem are in the living room. I don't do Cable so my TV is hooked up to another PC thus the router and modem being out there. My desktop in the office isn't getting the best signal right now. Worked great in the 2 story on different floors but not so well now. I have my network buddy coming over tonight and he has a stronger router for me I believe.

Anyways, I feel like I would want the NAS in my office but believe it needs to be hooked up to the router? Does it really need to be networked? While I would like the benefit I want performance above that. I am first looking for redundant storage and any cool features would just be a bonus.

Any suggestions on NAS' would be appreciated. Currently eyeing a Synology diskless and 2 WD Red HDD's

NAS is always faster connected to the router than wireless.

Other than that ... you could use wireless dongles that speak to each other, but your performance will degrade even more.

I'd leave it connected - there's no real need to have it in the same room as you other than you like fan noise and the look of glowing power light.

So to make sure I understand, have it connected to the router and wirelessly access it from my desktop?

Yes - it, and your desktop, are on the network.

If I'm not too late for your networking buddy, you might want to look into bridging the two wireless routers together so you can plug the NAS and your desktop into one, and let that router talk to the other wireless unit.

I'm assuming that most of your traffic is going to be back & forth from the desktop to the NAS. If that's the case, having even one wireless "hop" might really slow you down. I don't know how much data you're going to be moving around, but if there's any way at all you can stay wired to the NAS, it'll help significantly.
