I got my first DSLR camera today, I was shocked that I couldn't use SDHC cards on them as I have quite a few of them from my compact cameras. So I have to shop for a compactflash card, which compactflash brand do you recommend and at what speed/capacity? I am an absolutely nooby and probably will not take more than 100 shots a week.

Any of the approved cards listed in the user's manual. (page 390)

At 100 shots a week it really doesn't matter what speed or capacity you get but 4Gb cards will hold plenty of Raw files. If you only shoot JPEG, 2 GB will be overkill.
Class 6 will be plenty fast enough. The card speed is more about upload to the computer speed, than camera buffer write to the CF card speed.

The user's manual also has a chart that shows approximately how many photos you can get on each size CF card. (page 423)

If you don't have the D700 user's manual, you can download it here: User's Manual - D700 - Guide to Digital Photography

Thanks, KmH, so the maximum capacity D700 is cable of taking is 8GB? Has anyone tried 16GB or bigger CF cards on the D700?

I have a 16gb card that works just fine and plenty of 8's too. ;)

Why would you want cards that can hold that much data? If the card fails when near full, you lose a lot of photos.

I see some cards have UMDA, what does that mean? Can my Nikon D700 take advantage of UMDA?

That is also covered in your D700 user's manual. You might read the manual sometime. There are lots of other nifty features/functipons/controls the D700 has you would learn about.
You're on your own for the page number.

well I just did a search on UMDA in the manual pdf file, nothing came up.

I'm surprised nobody else finds this odd..........

You bought a D700 and didn't know what type of storage media it used? Seems like an awful lot of money to spend on something you seemingly didn't research at all.....

Anyhoo...... Good luck with the CF cards. I'm sure you will find something suitable.

Maybe that's because you got it wrong.. It's "UDMA" for Ultra Direct Memory Access.. Not all cameras are UDMA compliant, but you can usually always use the cards anyway, they just won't perform at their maximum capability.

I would guess that there are thousands of folks who are buying expensive UDMA cards thinking that they are "better", but their camera isn't likely to ever need such speeds..

As to size, you simply need to ask yourself how many images do you intend to take each time you go out.. A 16 gig card can be from 1,000 to 4,000 images, depending on camera and settings...

Very good point to take into consideration!

the 16g card holds 606 lossless-compression shots. Just FYI. I use multiple cards during a shoot, or back up if time allows.
