I have been asked to shoot a wedding reception. I will be using the Canon II Mark 5D. The room will be quite big and it will be a low light situation. What do you think is the best lens to rent? Any other tips on shooting wedding receptions and low light settings would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Do you have a flash?

Reception halls are usually quite dark...and even with a 'fast' lens and high ISO, you may have trouble getting fast enough shutter speeds for sharp shots. Flash is the go-to tool for a job like that.

Ideally, off-camera flash, but bounced flash can work very well. A last resort is direct flash, but if you know how to 'drag the shutter', it can still be a good way to go.

Of course, a 'fast' lens (large max aperture) will help. The 24-70mm F2.8 L is probably the best choice. I also find that I use a 70-200mm F2.8 L, quite a lot during receptions.
