Tried out this technique last night. The second one is Day 25 of my 365 Project. I don't have a macro lens yet so I just had to crop in. Low ish resolution, oh well. C&C is appreciated!

I really really really like this type of photography. What were your settings for the pictures? I want to learn how to take these since i live where its pretty cold and some cold air breathes would be some great shots

What you want to do is fire a flash off camera at the smoke, but attach something flat to block the light from spilling onto the background. This lights up the smoke and accentuates the shape and form of it. For this, I had a second flash aimed at the background to light it up. As for the camera settings, this was at f/4 1/250.

Thanks! It is the source of the smoke, a candle. Now that I look at it, it doesn't add much to the composition.
