why are hasselblads so expensive?

Hi,
As mentioned above, the sensor size is one reason for the higher price. In addition to this, the solution with a digital back (Hasselblad is still such a solution, though the back can't be removed) is always bigger, bulkier and more expensive.

I tried to explain how today's Hasselblad was formed within the scope of my PhD studies:

Hasselblad - From the Moon to surviving Disruptive Innovation

Also with the much mentioned sensor size, one needs to realise that the cost of sensor increases exponentially with size. While with a small sensor you get lots of units per wafer and a defect thus affects a small percentage of the overall wafer, few large sensors fit on a wafer and the yields are low. Imagine if 4 units fit on a wafer then a single defect gives less than a 75% yield. Manufacturing is far from error free and yields on medium format sensors are ludicrously low.

Hence the price. It's not the Hassys. The cameras are what you'd expect of any precision equipment. It's the damn sensor. Look at the Phase One P25 digital back. 22mpx and $29,990 when it was first released. This is a device which just records the damn light and copies it to a memory card. Everything else is done by the camera.
