why are my photos "soft"?

It's not the body/kit lens. With a Canon XSi and kit lens (18-55mm) I can get out pictures that aren't soft like that.

The problem is focusing, shutter speed, and depth of field. Decrease the aperture size (raise the f/#), increase shutter speed (at least 1/60 or 1/100 at 55mm), and learn how to focus better. I *very* rarely take focus off the center point (just turn on center-point and leave it there). With good IS and good ability to handhold you don't really have to follow this rule (it's more of a guideline), but always make sure shutter speed is at least 1/mm. Meaning, at 55mm zoom you should be at faster than 1/55" shutter speed. In those pictures though you should be able to go to 1/250 or faster (it's outdoors and bright).

Try taking a few pictures outdoors at f/8, ISO100, 1/250 or faster shutter speed, and using the center focus point only. *THEN* we can decide if there's something wrong with your lens/body.
