Lower class women in the third world do much of the unskilled, manual work.

Carrying bricks up the ramps for the brick masons

Carrying big rocks in order to -

yes folks, build a road bed by hand. Later they load a small crusher to make gravel and spread gravel over this big stone base and some guy runs up and down sprinkling hot tar from a 5 gallon tin with holes punched in it. Not exactly a concrete interstate highway.

It looks like the dirt would be a better/smoother road, but I guess that gets washed out?
and what do they use on these roads, carts, bikes, cars?

This is the road for anything from bicycles, oxcarts up to big trucks. I never saw a tractor trailer but there are plenty of big trucks hauling anything you can think off.
Only certain parts of the country have formally maintained asphalt roads and even those aren't constructed in complex multi-layers as they are here in the US.
Most are rock layer, gravel overlayer and small amount of tar, rolled smooth.
Since there is no freezing weather, the only worry is the traffic.
Most roads are in horrible condition and travel is very slow.

I like the brick-carrying shot...very nice formal balance, and that massive wall of stacked up bricks is a fascinating subject in an of itself. Man...we never realize how good we have it here until we see how the other half lives.
