Working with Black and White

I enjoy some Black and White and am shooting with a D90. I have seen som post cards that are Black and White , but also have a hint of Red to make the photo "pop" . I was wondering how this is done . Is there a link where I could get instruction on doing this ? I also have Lightroom 3.4 ..
