What's new

Would THIS photo have been YOUR winner?

what an awful decision.... imo the judges where either drunk, on drugs or both. There are some that are waaaayyyyy better than that image... in fact if i had to list all of them in order of how good they were, that one would be somewhere near the bottom. Sorry if the winner ever gets to read this but... you fail. :greenpbl:

i left a small comment on that site ;)

Very displomatic comment! Wow.
No one can read from it whether you think this photo is good or whether it is not good. All you say is it is difficult to get a good photo of a butterfly because they are always on the move. Could mean you express total understanding - as if these photos are bound to become bloopers ... erm  sorry ... winners. E-hem. ;)
(And when did you reach your 12.000th post, and where was the party?)

Ah well.
Today I get the chance to read in the printed paper the reason the jury gave out for choosing this photo over all the others, and one juror is being quoted with the words "We made this one the winner because of the nice combination of colours and for the fact that it takes two or three approaches to actually recognise the butterfly for what it is". Oh ... :er: ... well then!

Their upcoming topics are:

July:holidays
August: summer impressions
September: flowers
October: autumn
November: animals
December: architecture

I better choose no longer to submit until December at least...

Battou, it would be "vacation" to you Americans. I know that you call "Holidays" the time around Christmas ... sorry, mine's primarily British English I speak and write...

oh.... Still, I find it funny to see in text.

Wow, sounds like my kinda contest! I've got lots of blurry shots that takes someone a second/third glance to figure out

I basically said that it is a rubbish shot, which has been recycled for this competition.

I just put it in nice words ;)

I really like the dog jumping in the water. I have some bee photos that look just like that butterfly one... Just a blurry bee and a flower. Maybe I should enter them in some kind of contest .

Am I the only one to actually quite like the inning photo. I can see why the judges liked it - the butterfly being made to look like a flower via the capturing of it's movement is almost a statement about nature being one. I'd find a photo competition quite boring if it was judged on technical picture quality alone - that's not what art is about.

Whether I'd have picked it though is a different matter. But it's not so bad...

I think it was an inside-job! ;) The one that won is in the lower 20th percentile from among all the entries.

You might be able to abstract a secondary and therefore interesting, meaning of the contest's theme: "movement" but it's a bad photograph judging by the tiny little thing I saw. Maybe at 2k pixels it looks better? That happens too. Anyway from what I could see the winning shot shouldn't have been much of a consideration IMO.

But by looking at them in small size as it is I like that man on the donkey, the pushbikers chased by ducks and the boy piggybacking his sister. And maybe the lone horse in running action.

I am not sure though but I like the first 3, they are funny looking shots.

I love a lot of those photos. Especially yours. I am sure it ran a close second. The movement of the red dress is very Flamenco and perfectly framed. Some photos were certainly sophomoric, but that's ok. Got people thinking and participating. Keep in mind that this contest's sole purpose is to sell newspapers.

Personally I would of picked the butterfly as the winner as well. Excellent use of colour and composition. Dynamic is a good way to put it. Visually I think motion is better conveyed with blurr. Also found it to be the most original out of all the submissions.

Not sure who the judges are, but if they are in publishing I can tell what they are thinking. Generally they have seen it all before. They are looking for original ideas and impact. Photos are about feelings. Not about sharp focus or whatever.
