WTB Canon or Nikon DSLR for beginner

looking for a good used DSLR for a total newb prefer a Canon but Nikon is not out of question either ,, d40 or 50 , or on the Canon side an XS or somthing that doesnt cost an arm and leg , megapixels are not that important to me just something I can learn with and take good photo's with .
