There are times you only get ONE chance at a good photograph ...... Then you run back to your truck, praying you don't hear pounding hoofbeats, while screaming like a teenage girl !!!

Of all the animals around here, these guys scare me more than anything. More than the bears and snakes (the snakes scare me a lot, mind you), the Bison are just plain frightening.

Of course, there's a reason why they have a legal distance you're allowed to be from the animals. I seem to recall a video of somebody getting the crap mauled out of them by a bison in Yellowstone recently when they thought it was a good idea to get real close. Nice shot but I keep my distance in Yellowstone unless I'm in my car and have no choice. To each his own, of course.

The problem is people think they are fluffy cows. They are not. But I do get more nervous around moose than bison.

moose don't seem as hostile to me. I respect them because i know they can inflict damage, but bull bison just seems to have such a bad attitude all the time.

Cows kind of freak me out too, though. Especially in the spring when there are young calfs around. When I encounter a herd of cattle, I keep my distance. One to respect their owner, just because they are on public land doesn't mean the animals themselves are public property, and two, to respect the animals and their young. I am never sure if the frenzy of mooing is meant to warn the other, or warn me.

Have you ever encountered a herd of pronghorn at night? Once my wife and I were walking through a park, it was completely black, and we started hearing this weird "chuffing" sound. It turned out to be a group of pronghorn just off the path. It's actually a really intimidating sound that is difficult to pinpoint where it's coming from. I can see how it would be useful to confuse and intimidate wolves, coyotes and dogs which rely on their sense of sound to precisely locate prey.

My caption was 'toung-in-cheek' of course ... I may be a kittle reckless sometimes, but I'm not stupid ... Shot was taken at 500mm.

I was hoping that there was a telephoto involved. I would not want to be "that close" to one of those. They are, or can be, very aggressive - regardless, I wouldn't want to be that close unless I was in a vehicle of some sort.
