Once again I need to decide what images I want to enter into this month's competition at my camera club. The competition is Open Mono Print, and so any mono work is acceptable. I think I most certainly will do the face/hand image, but choosing the second is tricky...any help would be appreciated. :)

Wagon Wheels mono aged by http://bendthelight.me.uk, on Flickr

Gulls in food fight by http://bendthelight.me.uk, on Flickr

Reservoir Lock Mechanism HDR mono by http://bendthelight.me.uk, on Flickr

And this is the one I am almost certain to enter:

Ruby Hands New Version mono horror by http://bendthelight.me.uk, on Flickr

Cheers

#1 is nice.

One thing I noticed.... I like the strange angles and strong triangular shapes and sharpness of Gulls in Flight and think a tighter crop would make a very interesting abstract. The birds head in the middle immediately let's the reader know what it is and takes away the mystery of it so it doesn't become the usual guessing game, but instead allows the me to enjoy (with much surprise I might add) the very strong geometrical patterns that have been created by the flailing wings. That's some really nice content.

Thank you. I may try that. :)

Eh padlocks are sooo sooo common - now Reservoirlocks are far more interesting! Plus whist it hasn't got the same strong, bold textures of the padlock; it does have, what I feel, is a far more interesting and curious background to it; whilst the lock is just grainy.

I personally like the Padlock the best. I wish that the link to the right of the padlock had more room to breath at the top of the frame. Secondly, I wish it was not QUITE as contrasty and had more tonal gradation. I think it would be your best bet alongside the hands/face one. Good luck!

Definitely an interesting background isn't it? It's what caught my eye when I was processing it.
Thanks for your ideas.

Yes, not noticed how tight that link is at the top. I'll see about toning down the contrast a little. Thanks for the input. :)

The padlock. I would clone or darken some of the bright spots in the background. You could also crop a little on the right which would eliminate the one a little above center along the right edge.

No telling how this will do in a camera club. In my experience judges either love or hate this sort of thing.

Thanks. The chain and padlock seems to be a favourite...as for judges, for the most part we judge internally, so an "average" of all the members present decides the winners...sometimes it's just about getting something different that they've not seen before, although some of the "older" ones tend to dislike anything too different, but this is an OPEN competition...anything goes. :)
