1980's style....Vivitar 285HV with Quantum Battery 1... quick recycling about 400 flashes per charge, but lead-acid heavy... I suspect the new technology will perform well with much less weight and perhaps slower recycle, but smaller and lighter and cheaper. If you have never used an external battery I would tell you that it is quite useful at events, and having a power source you can count on is quite freeing.

A flash that has 1/64 or 1/128 fractional power offers both low output and Incredibly Fast Flash duration, which you might find quite useful for insect or other fast-moving macro applications such as water drops.
