What's new

You should be using Aperture Priority all the time. Agree?

I'm on Av/A maybe 90% of the time. Rarely do I use Tv/S and I only really put it on (M) manual for when using flash, especially off-camera.

Nothing wrong with aperture priority.. especially since consumer cameras (like Rebels) can be a PITA to change settings on and could cause you to miss a shot.

I've actually tried getting used to using Av on the 5D, which I will say, using Av on the T1i was a lot easier. Mainly because I'm so used to using manual now with independent aperture controls, that I find it counter intuitive to change my aperture with the upper scroll wheel. However, if in Av on the 5D they had it so that the thumb wheel controlled aperture, and the scroll wheel controlled exposure compensation, it would seem more proper.

I'm probably the only one that thinks that, but who knows?

So because of this, I shoot in manual 100% of the time.

You've touched upon a Canon ergonomics and control issue that users of other systems are pretty familiar with. THERE ARE other, different, better systems (note the plural-systemS) out there...including one that allows the user to re-program the function of the buttons...

Cool D.

Still don't care. I enjoy using manual.

I had to use my D500 the other day and it drove me nuts. So when im on manual the wheel at the front changes the shutter. Is there a button I can press simultaneously while I move the wheel to change the aperture? That was the reason I used mostly AV, but like tyler said now I do maybe 98% manual.

Yeah, the Av button on the back on the upper right side of the LCD I think. Hold that down in manual and use the wheel to change your aperture.

thanks.. you should have said RTFM tyler LOL

Eh, the amount of flexibility I usually need can be handled by exposure compensation automatically.

Same here. I'm usually in Av and use exposure compensation when I need more granular control.

I'm always in Manual. I shoot Pentax and the wheels to change the aperture and shutter are right where I rest my thumb and finger so its very ergonomic :) I'm using OCF for most of my pictures now and AV won't work with that. For anything else without a flash I shoot I still use manual, I don't want to get spoiled using AV lol.

Why do you say AV wont work? Of course it does.

The only settings I can use my strobes/flash (no name) is Shutter priority or manual. Av will not work.

Thats odd.

Yeah Penatx will only let you use the other modes if you have a Pentax flash. To tell you the truth I haven't tried to use the other settings with my sync cord yet. It might work with that but anything connected to my hot shoe won't.

However it won't meter from my strobes so using AV with them is useless. Or am I wrong?

I think the key point of the video was the last line:
"Leave it there, unless you've got a reason not to."

M & Av are pretty much the only modes I ever use. Av is mostly for when I hand the camera to someone else and don't trust them to know what settings to use.
