It is difficult to gain perspective from the first two...

Nice colors that time of year but you have the same harsh midday light.
I think next time you need to get above the tree line and let us look down that majestic canyon via your camera. Having it pointed up at a single wall does nothing for me.

I agree. I actually thought that the first shot was a horizontal that was posted vertical. The second shot...I find myself trying to mentally straighten it.

Zion National park is on my list of places to visit in the future though.

My suggestions:

1. Wait it out for more favorable light.
2. Try some wider angles and compositions. (What focal length were those shot at anyways?)
3. Slower shutter speed and a ND filter for that waterfall.

Keep shooting! You can't improve without practice!

I know the Emerald Pools trail very well, and it is indeed a hard area to photograph. There is no tree line to get above, they go straight to the canyon walls. Not to mention how close you are to sheer 1000ft+ cliffs. The only way I have found to accurately capture the majesty of Zion in situations like that is by going wide. VERY wide.

Next time you're there, try getting your hands on a wide-angle lens, as well as waiting for light. With the giant red canyon walls on three sides of you in that canyon you can get some AMAZING bounce light.

Good suggestion! :)

Yes, I got many comments about horizontal line adjustment. It could be illusion as looking at the photos only without experience in the canyon. :)

Thanks for your suggestions! "Favorable light" gives life to the photos. We need some research in advance. I used Nikon 18-135mm lens. Even 18mm was not wide enough in the canyon. ND filter is must have for landscape photography. I need to get one. Thanks again! :)

Yes Mike, you know the canyon well. It was my first time to be there. Actually I did not do enough research in advance and had no idea what to shoot, needless to say where, when and how. Just noticed you are from Utah. Thanks for your suggestions! :)
