Zoom Lens

Hi, I am new to photography and really have no idea about focal lengths or 35mm equivelants. I have used a friend's Olympus E500 a few time with some good photos, but find the lens lacks zoom. I have now decided that I'm going to buy myself an Olympus E510, and have seen the 2 lens pack with a 40-150mm lens.

Is this a good zoom lense? What factor of zoom can I expect from this?
