Image stabilization is very handy for walking around with a telephoto lens, since it can save having to set up a tripod in some situations. However, these lenses do cost more than the cheapest telephoto zoom lenses.

However, bear in mind that most companies are very generous with how effective their VR is. Also, VR only eliminates hand shake; it does not freeze your subjects. VR is still a handy addition to have on a lens.

I can get semi-decent shots at 1/25s with the EF 70-300 IS at 300mm on a 1.6 FOVCF camera.
