Beginner Rocket Launch

I'm heading to Florida and catching a rocket launch at Cape Canaveral. Any one have any experience shooting one? I'm looking for lens suggestions, techniques, and if anyone is familiar with the area, a place to park and watch.

If you do not own a lens of focal length 300mm or more, rent one.

My Nikon 70mm-300mm VR is my longest lens. I'm currently trying to talk the wife into letting me buy the Tamron 150-600.

Long lens, very tall strong tripod and lots of bug spray are the first things that come to mind. We're on the wrong coast so don't know the "spots".

I have never attended a live rocket launch event (other than model rockets but someone I don't think that experience will compare). This sure sounds like a fun!

You could always rent a lens (much cheaper than buying... especially for a single event).
