Best Camera to buy under a $1000

Hello everyone,


I am travelling to the States/Canada from Amsterdam and decided to take advantage of the price differences,
finally move away from my trusty old Canon EOS 35mm camera to digital.
My budget is limited to under $1000 and I would be gratefull for any advice or recomendations.

Apart from the normal tourist stuff, as a professional artist I also want to use the camera to document my work/exhibitions,
return to making my own creative photographs and short video clips.

I know I am asking for a lot for my money

Hopefully someone can advice me.
