Best DIY flash (Macro)

I was wondering two things.
1)what was the best light fixture to use for macro shots? I hear its a ring flash.

2) If it is the ring flash, what is considered the best DIY ring flash for the Nikon D40 camera?

'Best' is a pretty subjective word. Typically, a ring light will give you even light...is that what you want? That might be good for scientific type shots...but directionally light would be better to show shape and texture on your subjects.

Im not sure what you mean by "scientific" type shots. The macros will mostly be of bugs if that helps.
