Birds in flight.

I tried to get some pics of this fella in flight but i sooo am bad at it!
This was taken at daytime..yes i know ..it's the worst hour to take pics!
How to improve on these shots..any ideas?
Btw..handheld cam and manual focus.

Hi, your last shot looks like an Egret

Its difficult enough to catch birds in flight but even so much more difficult using manual focus.

Using better equipment such as fast autofocus, fast good glass will certainly help in getting good sharp results.

A great effort none the less an ditto about the light - far too harsh at that time of day.

I used the Sigma 300mm lens for this shots..it's an okey lens but My cam,the Nikon D40 dont have the autofocus for this lens..I think i better go for the Nikon D300 for my next buy.
