Cloning

I downloaded Gimp and am trying to clone out part of a photo. I've been at it for around an hour and I just can't get it to look anywhere near realistic! Any suggestions? I've tried zooming in, zooming out, changing the opacity, using different colors from the surrounding area. I'm getting frustrated!

Around how long does it take to clone something out? Am I just being too impatient?

Depends on what you're doing. I've only tried on Adobe software so I don't know about gimp. Make sure you're using a soft-edged brush shape when doing patterns or busy areas (like grass). If I do it I try to work with the lines I'm given. Also It's almost impossible to do on gradients over a large area (like filling in the sky) in my opinion.
