Decent camera?

Hi, I'm new to photography and I was wondering what the prices of decent cameras are; those that aren't too expensive.

I guess more than $500 dollars would be expensive to me right now.

Nikon D40.... or Canon equiv... i'm not quite sure what it is..

Thanks a lot for the info guys. I hope to buy a good camera as soon as possible and post up some pictures. I really want to learn techniques of photography and enjoy it as an everyday hobby.
