"You don't need a man in your life to make your dreams come true, or to support you financially! You just need a man to compliment your life!"
And to hook up the stereo
But anyway, after looking at the manual (link at the end), the speakers outside should not be connected to this media center. Maybe they figured out a way to hook them up anyway. Do you have the model number for the outside speakers?
To remove the DirecTV box there was no reason to unhook the speakers. Have you tried sticking a CD in there to see if you get any sound? Inside? Outside?
Also, you don't mention a remote... is there none? I ask because in a lot of gear of this type, a number of functions, set-ups, etc can only be accessed through the remote.
Anyway, I believe the ex-owner left it behind because this is not the most practical piece of equipment, you're stuck with specific speakers. Also it's a 2.1 system while most people today want a 5.1 or a 7.1.
Keep the speakers outside, if they work and are separate from the system, but replace the rest with something else. If you want to listen to music while out by the pool, you may want to consider a CD jukebox so you don't have to come in regularly to change the CD. Not sure that anybody still makes them but you can probably find a used one. You stick 2-300 CDs in and it plays them any which way you want.
Of course, if you're into MP3s, it's even easier.
