Help me decide!

in regards to the VRI.

The tamron is: sharper, allows more light, has less distortion, has less vignetting, has less CA, and has much better corner sharpness.

VC is > VR

and it's shorter, has more lens elements, but weighs the same.

It's on par to the VRII in almost all regards, but it's priced to compete with the VRI that was never designed for an FX and especially one with 24MP.

Well, call me crazy but I just picked up the Nikkor VR1 used, of course. Just paid! $1150 shipped.. reputable ebayer. Described to be in mint condition with very few actuations on it - in the hundreds. I'm hopeful.. and figure if I hate it I can likely easily turn around and re-sell for at LEAST what I just snagged it for.

Good choice! I've had mine 10 years, never had a lick of trouble with it, rain or shine or cold winter days. I've had it out in driving rain and in blizzards. It's my 2nd most used lens, 28-70/2.8 being the most used.
